The Arab World – Another Planet?

How do we perceive the Arab World? How do the Arabs think, feel and live? Is every Arab a Muslim? And is every Muslim an Arab? How do the relations between men and women function? How do the Arabs mark days in their calendar? And actually which calendar? Has the essence of the Arab society changed after the Arab Spring? How does the communication with an Arab look like?

In my book ‘The Arab World – Another Planet?’ I give a realistic insight into the Arab societies today. I have chosen topics that are of great interest to foreigners. I even delve into taboo topics that are generally hidden from the eyes of Westerners but play a significant role for the Arabs. I speak on the Arab sexuality, gender relations, circumcision, superstitions and social casts. Another chapters touch upon the uncovering of the boundaries between life and death, including rituals, drugs, and alcohol. I present these topics also from the view of a woman who has lived and worked for many years in Arab countries and interacted mostly with men.

The book provides information on how to grasp the mentality and behaviour by different Arab societies. It is based on facts, acquired knowledge and my personal experience through stories which would help the reader understand various nuances of this culture.

‘The Arab World – Another Planet?’ has won me two awards: the 3rd place in the ‘Debut of the Year 2009’ awarded by the leading Slovak literary journal ‘Book Review’, and ‘Award for Slovak Literature’ for the Year 2009 awarded by the Slovak Literary Fund.

Life the Arab Way

What do we need to know when we want to drive in the Arab World? Is it enough or even necessary to be a holder of a driving licence in this part of the world? What do Arabs celebrate and how? How does the Arab household look like? Is dancing considered a sin? Do Arab men visit school parent´s meetings? What is the Arab cuisine like?

We will go through the educational system, look into wardrobes of both men and women, discuss what is fashionable these days and intrisically talk about the controversy of wearing the veil. Hygienic habits will be another big theme alongside with another one related to relations to animals. Importantly, we are going to deal with a complex Arab identity, as well as with situations in which we can easily make a faux-pas. I will take you to the heart of the Arab family and let you grasp the social rules. My ultimate grand theme will be dedicated to different Muslim and Christian religious festivals and associated family rituals and celebrations. Via my book I will let you zoom on the Arab Christmas, famous Ramadan and the Mekka Pilgrimage, however I will not omit the debatable Ashura. I will share my experience and adventures interwoven with the profound knowledge of this region.

Together with my "Arab World - Another Planet?" non-fiction both these books can be dubbed the Bible of the Arab society. Every single person travelling to this part of the world definitely has to have them at thir fingertips.

This book "Life the Arab Way" is loosely tied with the successful "The Arab World - Another Planet?" non-fiction. It delves in concrete elements of routine life in the Arab countries, communities and households beginning from the birth of a child, marriage, through dressing up and maintaining hygiene. Another portion will be dedicated to eating manners, rendering services, travelling and having fun. I pay attention to man-and-woman relations and to women´s behavior. By this book I introduce to non-Arabs and non-Muslims habits and reality of the Arab culture and society.

Every summer the Queen of Sheba used to visit the magically beautiful town of Sumhuram, in the territory of present-day Oman. For ages past it had been inhabited by genies, who were kind to human beings. In their stories, full of the aroma of frankincense and swarming with colour, music and dance, good contends with evil. Magic spells have enormous power, and the knowledge of how to employ them is by means exceptional.

From there let us move to the shore of the Indian Ocean, where the legendary Sindbad used to sail. Leaving a lost city, let us wander out into the inhospitable desert and immerse ourselves in the tales that the Queen who enchanted King Solomon used to listen to at night.

These tales are wise, and they teach us to sense the difference between good and evil and reflect upon our lives. The endings come in harmony with universal good.

I wrote these tales inspired by the legends, motifs and physical surroundings of Oman. The tales have been splendidly illustrated by Dávid Ursiny www.davidursiny.sk

What is the real Arab World like?

How do the Arabs feel, live and think?

What are the relations between men and women?

Is every Arab a Muslim and every Muslim an Arab?

What is the relation of Arab people towards animals?

Is it ever possible to learn the Arabic language?

In my book ‘Arab World – Another Planet?’ I give a realistic insight into Arab societies today. I have chosen topics that interest foreigners most. I even delve into such which are considered taboo topics or such with a hint of superstition. I speak of Arab sexuality, men & women (dis)harmony, circumcision and social casts. I uncover the boundaries between life and death and speak bluntly about rituals, drugs, and alcohol. And all of this I present to you as it in reality is, with the prevailing religion of this region – Islam. I introduce these topics also from the perspective of a woman who has lived and worked for many years in the Arab countries and interacted mostly with men.

How does the real Arab World look like?

How do the Arabs think, feel and live?

What are the relations between men and women like?

Is every Muslim an Arab and vice versa?

Is it ever possible to learn the Arabic language?

All these questions and many other are answered by me. Living on the edge of two cultures makes me to penetrate deeply into thinking and behaving of the Middle Eastern people. I brings profound explanations of this culture while leaving aside the stereotypes and cliche. This book is considered by many of my readers as a manual of the Arab society, first of its kind on the Polish market.

Cez ľudí a príbehy, zvyky a recepty otvára dvere do kuchýň štyroch arabských regiónov – Úrodného polmesiaca, Arabského polostrova, krajín Nílu a faraónov a severnej Afriky. Emíre Khidayer slovom a Alan Hyža fotografiou vás prenesú do reality so všetkými jej farbami, chuťami, vôňami i pachmi. Len si siahnuť a ste tam.
